Frequently Asked Questions

Who does The Victoria Project support?

The Victoria Project aims to support any athlete representing Singapore in open level regional/international competitions.

Where does my money go when I contribute to the athletes?

Firstly, thank you for supporting the athletes. The Victoria Project does not take a cut from your support to the athletes. However credit card facilities and other payment modes take a small charge that will eventually impact the amount received by the athletes themselves.

The current charges are -

Why should I support the athletes? Don’t they already earn money for representing Singapore?

Actually, the athletes that represent Singapore more often than not work full time jobs to cover the costs of training, nutrition, travel, accommodations and the actual competitions itself. There are a few selected athletes that are fortunate to receive a stipend from our sporting organizations, but it often does not cover majority of the costs.

Consider Schooling for example

“In 2008, when the Singapore Swimming Association shut down its Centre of Excellence (COE), Colin was convinced by ex-COE coach Jack Simon that the US was where Joseph’s Olympic dream lay. The Schoolings, who had to bear his school fees, expenses, transport and accommodation costs, took a leap of faith in 2009 and sent their only child abroad. Colin, a 66-year-old businessman, estimates spending nearly US$1 million (S$1.26 million) on Joseph.”

A Straits Times article published in 2014 mentioned how much the Schooling family forked out to have Schooling where he is today.

If I cannot afford to help the athletes financially, can I do anything else?

Yes of course!. Continue to show your support by following the athletes’ social media accounts and dropping them encouraging messages every now and then.

The Victoria Project aims to be a platform to house all the athletes representing Singapore across any and all sports so we will also be looking to creating discussion forums to help link the community together.

Lastly, when we do eventually host events, do consider joining us in meeting your favorite athletes!
